The Angiology and Vascular Surgery Service of the Hospital Quirónsalud Marbella offers the patient the radial approach (through the wrist) as new technique for the treatment of complex peripheral arterial disease. The main advantage of this treatment, which is not available in all centers on the Costa del Sol, is that it benefits the patient, since it allows immediate recovery and ambulation and minimizes complications compared to the classic femoral access. “This approach makes it possible to treat lesions in the iliac and femoral arteries, avoiding puncturing the groin, in a similar way to how cardiologists implant stents in the coronary arteries of the heart. After the procedure, a bracelet is placed on the patient’s wrist, which allows the patient to get out of bed and walk around and be discharged a few hours after the procedure”, explains the Head of the Angiology and Vascular Surgery Service, Dr. Fernando Gallardo Pedrajas.
According to data provided by the Spanish Society of Angiology and Vascular Surgery (Seacv) Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is one of the most prevalent conditions and coexistence with vascular disease in other locations, such as the heart or the arteries of the brain, is common. Early diagnosis is important in order to improve the patient’s quality of life and reduce the risk of major secondary events, such as acute myocardial infarction (AMI), stroke or ischemia in the lower limbs. Intermittent claudication of the lower limbs (pain when walking) is the most common form of clinical presentation. If these symptoms progress to rest pain or the appearance of trophic lesions due to lack of blood, they imply the need for early revascularization treatment, due to the high risk of losing the limb, Quirónsalud explained in a note.
Performance of complex aortic techniques
The radial approach (through the wrist) of complex peripheral arterial disease is one of the hallmarks of the Angiology and Vascular Surgery Service of Hospital Quirónsalud Marbella, but not the only one. In recent months, the incorporation of new specialists with consolidated professional careers has allowed the restructuring of the Unit and the expansion of the service portfolio. In this sense, a care project has been consolidated in which another differentiating factor stands out: performance of complex aortic techniques such as the endoprostheses modified by the members of the Vascular Surgery team at Hospital Quirónsalud Marbella. “It is about creating a specific piece personalized to the characteristics of the patient through detailed planning and elaboration and it is an excellent option in selected cases, with complex anatomies”, points out Dr. Gallardo.
Angiology and Vascular Surgery is the medical specialty that deals with the study of the circulatory system and the lymphatic systemdeals with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the blood vessels (arteries and veins). Different pathologies are treated: arterial (aneurysms, circulatory deficits of the lower and upper limbs, diseases of the arteries that supply the brain, intestine and other abdominal organs), venous (varicose veins, leg ulcers, vein thrombosis) and lymphatic (lymphedema).
