Estepona will once again be the starting point and goal of the sporting event ‘Great Costa del Sol Fund’. A competition that can be held after, due to the pandemic, there was no last year. Now, the sporting event has generated great excitement and has raised the number of participants to a thousand.
This march has been successful since its inception, since with only two editions it was elevated to the UCI category, thus obtaining the classification of international quality test and its inclusion in the calendar of the International Cycling Union. Of the more than a thousand tests of these characteristics that are held in our country, the ‘Gran Fondo Costa del Sol’ is one of the 14 that has this rating.
Regarding the test, due to the fire that Sierra Bermeja suffered at the beginning of September and that the march was going through areas affected by the fire, an alternative route had to be designed at some points. Thus, the new itinerary will continue to be close to 130 kilometers and a positive slope close to 3,200 meters. The starting and finishing point will continue to be at the Fair and Sports Park, although the time-scale initially planned at the Port of Peñas Blancas will take place at the Puerto del Espino, of almost 14 kilometers, 755 meters of unevenness and an average slope of 5, 4%.
On the other hand, for traffic management reasons, the end-of-march times will be taken 1.5 kilometers from the finish line, the march being open to traffic from that point until the arrival at the Fair and Sports Park.
The ‘Gran Fondo Costa del Sol’, which is organized by the cycling club Novocyclo and Motorpress Ibérica in collaboration with the Estepona City Council, will cross eleven municipalities and its objective is physical exercise for tourism, cultural, leisure and sports purposes.
