Estepona City Council has completed the works on the project for Comprehensive remodeling and pedestrianization of the Avenida de España in the section between the roundabout of Avenida Carlos I and Calle Terraza, an action that will connect the urban center with the seafrontas announced this Monday by the mayor of Estepona, José María García Urbano.

The councilor explained that this pioneering initiative places Estepona at the vanguard of sustainable cities who bet on the quality of life, well-being of citizensthe environment and the wide spaces for the pedestrian.

The mayor has pointed out that the remodeling project of this road has meant a investment of 1.5 million eurosco-financed with the Sustainable and Integrated Urban Development Strategy (EDUSI) ‘Estepona, Jardín de la Costa del Sol’ of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), historically being the main avenue of the citysince it crosses the city from east to west along the coastal strip forming part of the old N-340.

The action has included demolition of existing surface to create a wide pedestrian boulevard surrounded by planters which covers a total area of ​​5,286 square metres, and although the sidewalk is mainly intended for pedestrian use, it also has a beacon for the creation of a bike lane that provides continuity from the Port area to La Cala and that will allow road traffic for emergency vehicles.

On the other hand, there has been complete renovation of the sanitation networksubstituting the sewage and rainwater collectors, and providing a new design and discharge solution for the new projected separating networks, as well as in the design of the pavement, special emphasis is placed on removal of architectural barriers to promote an inclusive city.

The gardening and landscaping have great prominence in this project, where the entire existing grove has been respected and protected, including them in the new planters planned. For this, we have chosen the most suitable tree species and that provide greater landscape value to the environment, García Urbano has clarified.

Specifically, it is about palm trees, hearts of palm and trees of the pomegranate species, mulberry trees, chorisias and oaks. Along with the tree species, a curb formed by perennials and upholsteryand in the central part the trees are completed with shrubby species, he added.

The organic planter design allows to mark the flows of movement managing to provide the environment with the fluidity of natural spaces, being a trail recreation that naturally form in nature. In this way, by leaving a generous free space between the various planters, the transversal flow between the urban nucleus and the sea, and tIt has also been equipped with new areas with lighting that uses LED technology.

The street furniture It has been distributed along the entire avenue in a homogeneous way, where three walkable fountains have also been included.
