In the first eight months of 2022, the Costa del Sol Hospital has registered a total of eight multi-organ donations, four of them in brain death and four in controlled asystole, which have made it possible to extract 16 organs – 12 kidneys and four livers. In the same period, in addition, five multi-tissue donors have been obtained in this center. Tissue donors are people who, after their death, are not eligible to donate organs, but can nevertheless be tissue donors only. These are also very important to maintain a growing activity of tissue implantation in the daily clinical practice of traumatologists, ophthalmologists, cardiovascular surgeons, etc. In this sense, 26 corneas have also been obtained, and six of osteotendinous tissues.

These data have been possible thanks to the excellent work of all the professionals who make up the hospital’s donation team, which includes the figure of a local transplant coordinator, José Manuel Galván, and a multidisciplinary team made up of emergency doctors, intensivists, urologists , ophthalmologists, traumatologists, anesthesiologists and nursing professionals. It is very important to highlight, in this sense, the great work of searching for both health resources, as well as in terms of monitoring potential donors, taking into account the entire period of the pandemic.

The trend towards organ donation in the last 10 years in our hospital has risen considerably – it went from 5 in 2005 to 17 in 2017, 12 in 2019, 5 in 2020, 8 in 2021 and 8 until August 2022 -. After the two most important years of the pandemic, the fact that eight donations have been registered in eight months represents the recovery and upward trend of previous years.

Since the Costa del Sol Hospital obtained the necessary accreditation in 2002 to carry out organ and tissue extractions by the Ministry of Health, a total of 141 multi-organ donations have been registered, thanks to which a total of 376 organs (258 kidneys, 91 livers, five pancreases, eleven lungs and 21 hearts), 83 osteotendinous tissues and 300 corneas.

The profile of the organ donor has been around 60 years in these first months of 2022.

In addition to being an extractor center, the Costa del Sol has been a cornea transplant center since December 2011, after obtaining the accreditation that authorized it to carry out this activity in October of the same year -and it debuted with seven interventions in one month-. In the first eight months of 2022, the Costa del Sol Hospital Ophthalmology Service performed seven amniotic membrane transplants (from maternal placentas to cover or regenerate corneas); and one cornea.

“The donation and transplant programs are an essential element of our health system, so their maintenance has been a priority objective. Donation is a vital and unique treatment for many patients on the waiting list and all of them have been treated despite the pandemic, thanks to everyone’s efforts”, highlights the transplant coordinator of the Costa del Sol Hospital, José Manuel Galván.

How to become an organ and/or tissue donor

In order to become an organ and/or tissue donor, it is essential to express this to family members or the family environment. On the other hand, the donor card can be obtained from different places. It is always free and having it does not imply a definitive commitment. It can be canceled whenever the donor wishes. It is issued in public institutions, hospital transplant coordination, user information services of hospitals and health centers, National Transplant Organization; or private, such as associations of kidney patients and liver, heart or kidney transplant recipients. It can also be obtained by requesting it by mail to the Autonomous Transplant Coordination of the Andalusian Health Service, or by calling 900400034.

Since the launch, in May 2004, of the Registry of Advance Vital Wills, any citizen can record in it, among other aspects, their desire to be an organ and tissue donor. This Registry is mandatory to consult and must be compulsorily respected by those responsible for the patient’s health care. To register, you can request an appointment on the Salud Responde telephone number (955545060).
