The first deputy mayor and mayor of Tourism of mijasJosé Carlos Martín, has received this Thursday in El Torreón de La Cala the golf ‘Solheim Cup’ trophytogether with their ambassadors in Mijas from the Chaparral and La Cala Resort golf clubs, after landing in the city in a hot air balloon.

Mayor, Josele Gonzalezexplained that “it is the second time we have received this important trophy that, on its first visit, we symbolically displayed through the streets of Mijas Pueblo and today it will tour La Cala” and added that “golf is part of the economic, labor, social and tourist revitalization of our municipality and that is why we want to get involved in this project in some way”.

The ‘Solheim Cup’ is a biennial golf trophy that pits women’s teams of professional players from Europe against the US. The first tournament was held in 1990 and it was played in even years until 2002, alternating with the ‘Ryder Cup’. The Finca Cortesin will host the dispute of this competition on the Costa del Sol from September 18 to 24.

Martín has assured that “this reception is a way of symbolizing the importance that Mijas has in this sector and the international position that we have achieved by becoming one of the preferred golf destinations in the world. Nothing better than from the air to spot the 12 golf courses that we have and their magnitude”.

Likewise, he has valued “the union of all businessmen in this area in the town to fight together for the promotion of this sport that generates employment and stimulates the economy as well as one of the most outstanding tourist segments of the Mijas offer”.

Silvia Ortega, one of the ambassadors of the ‘Solheim Cup’ in the city and head of golf accounts at La Cala Resort, highlighted “the pride that the players from Mijas are taking part in this official tour of the cup through Spain”.

“Are 110 ambassadors and we are at the penultimate destination before the competition begins. For a year the cup has been received by each of the fields represented and we have reached the end. For us it is very important to give visibility to women’s golf and, above all, to the Costa del Sol as a golf destination”, she concluded.
