The workers of Hotel Ona Valle Romano Golf & Resortin Esteponaare demonstrating daily in front of the headquarters of the “vulture fund” and owner of the HIG Capital facilities in Madrid, to demand that it stop demanding the closure of the complexwhich would imply the loss of some 50 direct jobs, and more than 100 indirect jobs, as announced on Thursday by the spokesman for the workers’ platform, Juan Carlos Asenjo.

As reported, “HIG Capital is the owner of the facilities, although the management was transferred to Ona Hotels, which operates them as a hotel where more than 50 people work directlyapart from the indirect jobs generated by the activity of the complex and the maintenance of the facilities”.

Ona Valle Romano Golf & Resort is a “vacation complex” that combines a hotel, 430 apartments and an 18-hole golf coursebeing the brand’s second in Estepona and fifth on the Costa del Sol, and marketed “under a 3-star category premium”. Also has “three pools, spa, three restaurants and capacity for more than 2,300 guests” and it will be the “official accommodation of the Solheim Cup 2023”, he has indicated.

The workers point out that this “vulture fund is requesting the closure of hotel facilities with the intention of use the apartments for residential use and manage them for rent for annual periods, even going so far as to sell them by single units, thus obtaining more performance if possible, which would imply the infeasibility of the hotel and the loss of jobs, in favor of real estate speculation”.

To do this, they have assured that supposedly “HIG Capital has gone to different organizations such as the Tourism Inspection of the Junta de Andalucía, Estepona City Council and the courts, in addition to trying to pressure different bodies to get the hotel closedarguing irregularities in the management”.

As Asenjo has pointed out, “the courts have agreed with the workers and Ona Hotels, dismissing the claims and ordering HIG Capital to pay the costs, as well as considering “disproportionate” the requests of this “vulture fund”, for which he has advocated “the maintenance of the hotel management of these facilities, in order to ensure jobs and the activity of the complex”.

On the other hand, he recalled that since he took over the management, Ona Hotels “has come paying taxes, payroll, and also payment fees in a timely manner” to HIG Capital for the operation of the facilities, which were also maintained during the pandemic period, in which the chain continued to pay the same fees without any reduction, unlike what happened in a large part of the Spanish hotel industry, has aggregate.

The spokesman for the workers has denounced that HIG Capital “does not stop torpedoing us”, as well as the group has suffered “threats, harassment and boycotts in the facilities”, although they will continue to demonstrate at the headquarters of this “vulture fund” to defend their jobs, he asserted.

Ona Valle Romano Golf & Resort “is a perfectly functioning resort, there are five years left on the contract and the workers are getting paid on time. I understand that getting rich is legal but work is not an option, but a right”, concluded Asenjo.
